For thousands of years, Aboriginal people have harnessed the power of bushfires to promote the growth of edible plants, care for the land and make hunting easier. But climate change and a lack of sustainable land management have aggravated the effects of Australia's bushfires, with longer bushfire seasons and more extreme fires causing unprecedented states of emergency across the country. The effects of these ‘mega-fires’ have been heartbreaking for individuals, communities and wildlife.
This is an emotional cause for many, with gratitude, solidarity and anger driving fierce support for volunteer firefighters, wildlife rescue organisations and the charities providing financial and mental health support for victims. As well as restoring the landscapes and communities that have been devastated, support for this cause goes towards prevention: improving landcare, policy and working with Indigenous experts to stop future disasters.
