A disability is an impairment of the body or mind that makes it harder to perform certain actions or participate in activities. There are a huge range of disabilities, which can affect a person’s senses, movement, memory, relationships, learning or communicating. Not all disabilities are visible. However, it’s easy (and lazy) to simply blame a person’s disability for making their life more difficult. A more nuanced perspective might be to look at how society is making life difficult. This could be unreasonable expectations, discrimination, poor environment design, or ill-considered technology and communication choices, which combine to obstruct a person with a disability from participating in their community.
