What could 3.9 billion people possibly have in common? Unfortunately, this half of the world’s population still faces obstacles because of their gender. In Australia, this manifests as a lack of female leaders in companies and governments, exclusion from certain industries, consistent income and wage gaps, and gendered violence. Globally, many women are unable to choose who to marry and when, whether to have children and how many, and are barred access to education, employment and financial security.
So how to keep women safe from violence, financially secure and free from sexual exploitation? How can we give everyone the right to make decisions about their work, partner, body or children? Luckily, there are plenty of great answers. Education, legal advocacy and cultural change-making have seen support for female equality (feminism) increase exponentially in recent years. Specialist organisations supporting non-white, trans, Indigenous, fat, disabled, immigrant, and religious women have also been making an incredible impact. The future is female.
