First Nations people are the Indigenous peoples of their continent and culture. They comprise hundreds of groups that each have their own distinct set of languages, histories and cultural traditions. From the Apache in the USA, the Mayas in Guatemala and the Inuit of the circumpolar region, to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders of Australia and the Maori of New Zealand, First Nations people around the globe are connected by rich stories, culture and connection to their land. Despite resilience and strong communities, First Nations people often experience widespread socioeconomic disadvantage, generational trauma, discrimination and health inequality.
