It might be the month of love… but we’re freshening things up for 2023. Out with daggy old Valentine’s Day, and in with a day that heroes being in love with that special someone: you.
Yep, it’s International Self-Love Day on February 13th, and we’re all about it. And why not love yourself? The benefits might surprise you (and the alternative is disliking yourself, which is worse than living with a bad housemate. You can’t even move out - I mean, you and yourself are kind of a package deal).
In our first article, we ran through how International Self-Love Day was devised as a holiday to harness the power of self-love, and boost our confidence and courage (have a squiz here if you missed it). The concept was created by leadership and empowerment coach, Christine Arylo, who deliberately plonked it on the day before Valentine’s Day as a way “for people to celebrate loving themselves by the next day, and not need a romantic partner on Feb 14”.
Christine’s belief is that with a self-love mindset, we can start to feel more in control of our lives. A person who practises self-love doesn’t need validation from others - like, say, a Valentine’s gift, or being asked to the movies. That sense of self-worth starts to intrinsically come from within. And those aren’t the only benefits - according to Christine, self-love can:
That all sounds great, but how do you make it a reality? Since we’re using Valentine’s Day as inspo, how about plucking up the courage to ask out the person who knows you best on a date - yourself! Introducing… [drum roll]... the #SelfLoveDayte. Just like a regular date, but with someone who won’t stand you up or forensically analyse the bill with a calculator.
Of course, how you spend your #SelfLoveDayte is totally up to you, but we’ve knocked together a few self-love activity ideas as thought starters - including (our favourite) a rundown of the best new releases in cinemas right now…
Trip to the beach? Maybe a day in, some rose petals in the bath and cucumber slices on your eyes? Or a visit to the park, curled up under your fave tree with a great book? Whatever you’re into, spend the whole day resting - you’ve earned it. The emails will still be there tomorrow! Self-love means pampering yourself when you need it.
Outdoors lovers, we hear you. Pack the swag for an adventure where you can enjoy yourself without the company of others. Even if you’re not an explorer, you can still get active - start just by stepping outside. If it suits you, go for a walk or run. Cycle, garden, dance… the world’s your oyster! One thing’s for sure, though: exercise makes you feel good. So discover some self-love with a physical activity you enjoy - one that suits your level of mobility & fitness.
If you’re not that enamoured by the great outdoors, why not use the day to get your ‘ohhmmm’ on. Gently reflect upon the importance of your life and your goals. Embarking on an inward journey can often teach you more about yourself than anyone else can.
Sign up for that course! Learn to play an instrument or how to cook your favourite food. Set yourself a challenge that you know you’ll enjoy achieving - it could be as simple as that 500-piece puzzle you got from Aunty Jan that’s still in the box. Learning new things makes you more confident, as well as being fun.
While you’re relaxing, remember to stay curious. Catch sight of the beautiful, and savour the moment. Reflecting on your experiences will help you appreciate what matters to you, so you can embrace more of those things - like a feedback loop of self-love.
We can’t fib - this one’s top of our list. There’s just something about heading to the cinema sans company: you can sit where you like, there’s no annoying “Who’s that guy?” questions coming at you, and that popcorn & Maltesers combo is allllll yours! Here’s a few of the latest releases we’re keen to catch on our #SelfLoveDayte….
Yes, everyone’s guilty pleasure, rich-girl-poor-boy love story is back - we’re not shipping you. Once the highest-grossing film of all time (and still in the Top 4, if you’re counting), James Cameron’s Titanic first set sail way back in 1997, collecting an iceberg-sized pile of money and broken hearts all over the world. It’s full steam ahead again as Titanic returns to theatres freshly decked out with a new lick of paint: to celebrate its 25th Anniversary, Cameron himself has overseen a fully remastered, 3D release. They did say she was unsinkable, after all.
Not to be confused with the killer Tina Turner track (and biopic) of the same name, What's Love Got to Do with It? dives into the world of arranged (or “assisted”) marriage. Lily James is a London documentarian who follows her childhood bestie, Kazim, as he prepares to meet his bright and beautiful bride from Pakistan. Hmmm, will she fall for him along the way? We’re not saying, but since this is the newie from those clever Brits at Working Title Films - makers of such classics as Notting Hill, Bridget Jones and Love Actually - there’s a fair chance of a happy ending.
We’d be remiss if we didn’t include a big dose of self-love for the Marvel lovers out there! The threequel to the Marvel Universe’s titchiest superhero, Quantumania kicks off Phase Five of the Multiverse Saga. Translation: it’s a huge deal for megafans just itching to know what lies ahead. According to star Evangeline Lilly, the movie will explore each character's “fragilities and vulnerabilities”. Mortein and Aerogard? Nope - this time our heroes venture into the Quantum Realm, locking horns (or should that be ‘stingers’) with a furious sounding new bad guy in Kang the Conqueror, described as a "top-tier, A-list Avengers villain".
If those titles - or any other new releases - grab you, then you need to grab some Good Tix to check them out! Good Tix* are cheaper movie tickets (nice!) with a donation to charity built in.
