There’s just weeks to wait until Andrew Dominik’s eagerly anticipated Marilyn Monroe pic Blonde drops on Netflix globally on September 23. We’re pretty confident it’s set to stir up more attention than a silk dress over a breezy grate. Starring roles in Knives Out and the latest Bond entry rocketed Spanish-Cuban actress Ana de Armas’ global star wayyy into the ascendancy – but that hasn’t stopped a firestorm of criticism that a (gasp!) foreigner is playing America’s most famous blonde bombshell.
The whole fracas got us thinking about other casting decisions that got tongues wagging–and there’s been a few! Have a scroll through our list of movies that used casting to challenge our perceptions, making us think about cultural backgrounds on screen in a whole new way.
Have you caught Nope yet? It’s fair to say writer/director Jordan Peele’s third feature is… confounding expectations. Seems some audiences are loving the ambiguity and creepy, silent vibe of the UFO story – while others are royally annoyed that the film isn’t what it ‘promised to be’.
With questions like ‘What happened to the chimp?’, ‘Why doesn’t Daniel Kaluuya talk?’ and ‘What’s with that freakin’ shoe standing on one end?!’ there’s tons to unpack in this trilogy-capper that Peele started with Get Out and Us. Is Nope even close to what you expected? Check out the reviews other users in the good.film community have written - or write a review of your own, we’d love to see it!
Did you know that September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month AND Lymphoma Awareness Month? With this worthy trio in mind, it’s only right that we bring awareness to ‘The Big C’ by highlighting Cancer as our cause of the month. Check out our Top 10 movies shining a light on Cancer – all matched by clever good.film users like you.
Have you made a dent on our impact leaderboard over the last month? You’re not alone! We’ve seen a bunch of cause champions matching titles to causes at good.film (a round of applause emojis for you guys). Remember, just like wearing a pink ribbon for breast cancer or a white ribbon for domestic violence, matching is all about raising awareness. So when you match a title to a cause, it’s like you’re deciding which ribbon it should wear. And the more matches you make, the higher you climb on our Impact Leaderboard - kudos, you matchmaker you!
