July means “summer” blockbusters are incoming in a big way - hey thanks, Northern Hemisphere! - and they don’t come much pinker than this.
Yes, we’re about to meet a live-action Barbie, as our own Margot Robbie steps into the stilettos of the world’s most famous doll (alongside a bottle-blonde Ryan Gosling as her Ken).
With plot details tightly under wraps, the web’s been whipped up into a frenzy over what kind of movie Barbie could possibly be (and how Margot Robbie pulled off that perfect curvy foot shot). Is this just a two-hour toy ad, or is there more beneath the very pink surface?
Our bet is on more. The film’s being described as subversive and feminist, a satire of capitalism, a searing indictment of gender politics… oh, and a girl-power musical spectacle. That’s a LOT to live up to, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s writer-director Greta Gerwig.
Gerwig’s earned a great rep for exploring pointy women’s issues through her unique sense of humour, and she’s a superb director of women too (earning an Oscar nom for directing 2017’s Lady Bird). No wonder Collider called her “the perfect filmmaker to bring ‘Barbie’ to life”.
If there’s one thing we know the Barbie movie will be, it’s self-aware. Margot Robbie confirmed in a recent interview with TIME magazine, “We’re in on the joke. This isn’t a Barbie puff piece.” As big fans of patriarchy-piercing satire, we can’t wait to unbox this one.
If you prefer high octane to high heels, though, prepare for your next Mission. After four release date changes (and costing a lazy 290 million bucks) the seventh instalment of Tom Cruise’s impossible action-spy mega-franchise is - finally - about to hit our screens.
Call him crazy, but Cruise keeps putting his life on the line (literally) in the name of great entertainment. The last three Missions have seen him clinging to the sleek glass atop the world’s tallest building, clutching onto the side of an Airbus 400 as it takes off, and executing a HALO freefall skydive over 100 times - all in the name of delivering audiences something jaw-dropping. He might just be the biggest movie-lover on the planet (apart from us).
Now, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One is here: bigger, longer, expensive-er, and from the looks of the behind the scenes featurettes we’ve been seeing, even riskier than ever.
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One explodes into cinemas on July 8.
Barbie paints theatres pink on July 20.
